Challenge

McCormick & Company, one of the world's most recognised spice and flavour brands, had built their digital experience on Sitecore JSS — a powerful but technically demanding platform. Their site was underperforming on Google PageSpeed Insights, scoring just 35 on desktop and below 40 on mobile. Slow load times were hurting engagement, SEO rankings, and conversion rates across their recipe and product pages. Their Shopify-powered checkout flow added further complexity: assets were loading sequentially, third-party scripts were blocking the main thread, and there was no systematic performance governance in place.

Solution

Dcrayons took on the full management of McCormick's Sitecore JSS front-end, running a structured performance sprint alongside ongoing platform operations. We audited every page template, identified render-blocking JavaScript, and introduced async/deferred loading patterns across the JSS component library. Third-party scripts — including analytics, marketing pixels, and product recommendation widgets — were moved to a tag manager queue with appropriate loading priorities. On the Shopify checkout side, we consolidated redundant asset requests, reduced bundle sizes, and enabled edge caching for static resources. Image delivery was optimised using next-gen formats with lazy loading applied to below-the-fold content. Critical CSS was inlined for above-the-fold components to eliminate layout shifts. Every change was tested against Lighthouse benchmarks before going live so improvements compounded rather than regressed.

Results

Within one sprint cycle, desktop Google PageSpeed Insights score rose from 35 to 85 — a 143% improvement. Mobile score moved from below 40 to 75. Core Web Vitals moved into the green zone: Largest Contentful Paint dropped by over 60%, Cumulative Layout Shift was reduced to near-zero, and First Input Delay fell below 100ms. Page load speed improvements translated directly into better organic rankings on recipe-category pages and a measurable uplift in add-to-cart rate on the Shopify checkout. McCormick's marketing team can now run seasonal campaigns — including high-traffic events like 4th of July — without performance degrading under peak load.
